The Holy Redeemer parish has grown up along with the community around it. Holy Redeemer was originally a mission of the parish of
St. John the Evangelist in Forest Glen. In 1911, Holy Redeemer dedicated its first church building, on a three-quarter acre plot at the corner of
Connecticut Avenue and Prospect Street in Kensington.
It remained a mission church until 1948, when the Most Reverend Patrick O’Boyle, Archbishop of Washington, established Holy Redeemer as a separate parish and appointed the Reverend Stephen J. Hogan its first pastor. As it grew, the young parish received help from the Holy Cross and Carmelite Fathers. Children received Catechism instruction from sisters of St. Francis of St. Bernadette’s Parochial School in
Silver Spring.
In 1951, Holy Redeemer dedicated a new school, convent and auditorium at the church’s present site, a nearly seven acre plot donated by the family of the late B.E. Saul. The
Prospect Street property had been sold, so the auditorium became a temporary sanctuary.
In the years to come, the rectory was built, the school went from eight to 21 classrooms and the convent doubled its accommodations. Father Hogan died suddenly in 1958, and was replaced by Monsignor E. Robert Arthur.
Construction of the new parish church began in 1962. The Johnson and Boutin architectural firm designed the building, which was constructed by the Joseph E. Nebel Company. Dedication was on
April 6, 1963.
Monsignor Leo J. Coady served as pastor from 1966 until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure, the
Holy Redeemer Nursery School began operating in 1973 under the direction of Beverly Langston, who remains in that position today.
Monsignor Ernest T. Gatta led the parish from 1989 until his death. The Reverend Walter Lawrence served as pastor from June 1993 until November 2001. Reverend Michael A. Salah, is the current pastor, since
December 28, 2001.

Holy Redeemer's Religious Education Office has as its mission the passing on of the word of God, which was entrusted to the Catholic Church by our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is through teaching this divine Word, contained in both Sacred Scriptures and Sacred Tradition, that our religious education program assists parents, the leaders of the "domestic church," in their God-given responsibility of leading their children to life everlasting.
Religious Education is provided to children who do not receive religious instruction at day school. Children begin at age 4, moving up a grade each fall as they do in a weekday school. After 8th grade, teens join our High School CCD program. Adults take advantage of many faith opportunities throughout the school year. The Religious Education office is located in the school building, next to the library.
Our Adults
Realizing we "never outgrow our need for" growth, adults can take advantage of numerous chances to refresh their faith knowledge. Talks by parishioners and guest speakers, sacramental evenings, videos followed by discussion are offered. The parish bulletin publicizes these and more adult opportunities. Watch for them.
