2nd Grade Curriculum

Language Arts:
Our Language Arts program uses a theme approach while incorporating phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, leveled readers, grammar, and writing.  The children are introduced to many genres through reading and oral storytelling.  The program offers an extensive support system with vocabulary, photo, oral vocabulary and retelling cards.  There are weekly and unit assessments.

Math:
We use the Saxon Math 2 program.  Each day the children practice basic math facts and learn a new skill.  The children use hands-on manipulatives daily to help enhance their understanding of the material.  There is continuous review of facts and skills.

Science:
With the use of the Macmillan/McGraw Hill program, students learn about life science, earth science, and physical science.  In life science, the students learn about plants and animals and their habitats.  In earth science, students learn about their earth and resources as well as observing weather and space.  In physical science, the students learn about matter, motion, and energy.  Students take field trips to the Baltimore Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center to further enrich their learning.

Religion:
Second Grade is an important year for the students.  They will continue to build their faith by receiving tow important sacraments.  We follow the Christ Our Life program to prepare the students.  As we prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in March, students visit with the priests to discuss forgiveness.  After completing this sacrament, students begin to prepare for their First Holy Communion in May.  The priests and families become involved in this wonderful journey!
